Grass trees, also known as Xanthorrhoea, are a quintessential element in the aesthetic of the Australian bush. With their rigid, grass-like leaves and rough-surfaced trunk, the plants can take up to twenty years to emerge and develop. While not all species produce an above-ground stem, they all have a secondary thickening meristem in the stem and are perennials. Artists of all kinds are constantly drawn to these beautiful plants. In this black and white expression, I like the juxtaposition of the explosion of grass tree fronds set against the tangle of the woodlands behind.
