Since 1976, I have been captivated by the raw beauty of what we know today as Kakadu National Park, which holds a wealth of memories. This work is a tribute to the unique sandstone country known to the locals as Bunitj Country. Among the sandstone parapets, unique monsoon forests are a haven for many plant and wildlife species, with new species waiting to be discovered. This is a biological hot spot that has earned global recognition. My time with the late Bill Neidjie, who was then a traditional owner, played a pivotal role in my life. I first met Bill in this country forty-five years ago, and at the time, I had never had a conversation with a traditional First Nations person.

Bill was curious about the idea that you could make pictures and put them in a book – a book that held great power to inform others of the importance of his Country. We stood together, looking across his land, and as he put his big foot atop mine, he gestured across the floodplain and said, “Steve, put ’im in a book one day might all be gone. May soon be high-rise over there!" We did 'put 'im in a book', and there were several.
