The Lumholtz's tree kangaroo inhabits the Wet Tropics rainforest of tropical north Queensland, centred on the Atherton Tablelands—between the Daintree Rainforest and the Cardwell Range. Their remarkable camouflage, shy behaviour, and preference for staying high in the canopy make them challenging to spot in the wild. However, during my exploration of a forest on the Atherton Tableland in north Queensland, I was fortunate enough to witness several of these delightful tree-dwelling macropods. The local Indigenous people refer to Lumholtz's tree kangaroos as Boongarry, Mabi, or Maple.
