Freshwater creeks, rivers, and dams in eastern Australia extend from far north Queensland down the east coast and into temperate South Australia; they are also commonly seen in Tasmanian dams and rivers. These are the preferred waterways for the endearing platypus. The bill contains thousands of tiny “sensors” that detect invertebrates, fish, and frogs. Platypus are solitary and primarily nocturnal, best seen foraging at dawn and dusk. They usually rest in a “camping burrow” when not grooming or feeding.
