Every day of their lives, numbats leave the safety of their tree hollow nests to venture out into a dangerous world to feed. Here, the animal is frozen midstep, employing all senses to search out potential danger. The Numbat is the wildlife emblem of Western Australia. They are a specialist termite eater, using their olfactory senses to sniff out termite mounds. They then devour the insects with their long tongue. Like many of Australia's mammals, the Numbat's distribution has decreased significantly since the European occupation of Australia, and there are a mere 1,000 individuals in the wilds inhabiting small areas of woodland in Western Australia's southwest.
