While flying over this landscape, I could not help but reflect back hundreds of millions of years when megafauna roamed these arid rangelands of what is now Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park. The Adnyamathanha language group, known as ‘the rock people’, roamed freely across this beautiful landscape for generations. It is a region of extreme beauty regarding the geological structure, colour, tonal and textural ranges through an artistic eye. The botanical beauty of pines and river red gums backed by craggy rangelands has motivated a broad creative fan club representing many forms of creative expression. This is the northern breakaway, a geological feature that marks the edge of the ancient Wilpena Pound, the principal feature in the Park, which was formed millions of years ago by geological forces.
