The red lionfish are voracious feeders and have outcompeted and taken over the niche of overfished snapper and grouper. They mainly feed on crustaceans, other invertebrates, and small fishes, including young lionfish. When hunting, they use their large fins to corner prey and then quickly swallow it whole. They primarily hunt from late afternoon to dawn.
