A Moloch Celebration WL4542
The thorny devil, known commonly as the mountain devil, thorny lizard, thorny dragon, and Moloch, is a small, slow-moving, and relatively gentle ant-eating reptile. They have an extraordinary natural history; each time I encounter one in the desert, my heart skips. Their form, texture, and body patterns create unrivalled camouflage, and their genetic name, Moloch, goes back to 500 BC and into Babylonian times. Like many Australian reptiles, they are endemic.
