When not feeding, flying, mating or sleeping, all birds preen their feathers incessantly. During this 'taking care' process, they seem to enter a state of detachment that sometimes enables one to sneak that little bit closer for photography. Here are three of my favourite water birds - the black-necked stork, glossy ibis and royal spoonbill.
