This piece of work was inspired by the many years I spent exploring the vast floodplain wetlands of northern Kakadu National Park, a World Heritage Site managed in part by the Bunitj people. My experience with the late Bill Neidjie, a traditional owner in the 1980s, played a crucial role in shaping my life. I first met Bill on top of Ubirr, which is now a popular tourist site with a view of the northern floodplains of Kakadu. This encounter occurred forty-five years ago, and at that time, I had never engaged in a conversation with a traditional First Nations person.
