Lake Tyrrell in northwestern Victoria is believed to be the oldest known source of evidence of human habitation in Victoria and Tasmania. Evidence suggests that humans were near the lake around 44000 years BCE. Large earthen ovens containing stone artifacts, charred bones, and shells have been found in the area. The land around Lake Tyrrell is part of the territory of the Boorong clan of the Wergaia Language Group. The Boorong people were renowned astronomers, and their dreaming stories were reflected in the skies over Lake Tyrrell.
