The Pieman River in Tasmania is a breathtakingly beautiful river that flows through the Pieman River Conservation Reserve. In 2015, a series of stunning images were captured of the river on a calm morning with clear blue skies, thinning mist, and a rising sun. These images are a poignant reminder of the need to protect the wilderness frontier of the Tarkine Region from development and mining claims. One of the images even captures a sea eagle on patrol over the river.

The forests along the Pieman River are filled with a diverse range of trees, including leatherwood, celery top pine, sassafras, king billy pine, huon pine, myrtle beech, pencil pine, native laurel, soft tree fern, slender tree fern, blackwood, cutting grass, and native plum. The understory of ferns, mosses, liverworts, and fungi is equally stunning and forms an essential part of the rainforest ecosystem. Between April and June, visitors to the Pieman River can experience a wonderland of over 60 species of fungi and many rare and endangered lichen species. This region is truly a temperate botanic paradise.
