The Art of the Clam II SL275961.jpg
Giant clams symbolise coral reefs, and these beautiful, artful creatures are filter-feeders that sieve plankton from the surrounding water. No two Giant clams have the same colouration. Like the corals and many other reef invertebrates, they rely on symbiotic zooxanthellae (algae) for their energy needs. This artful specimen was photographed on the Swains Reefs east of Gladstone, Queensland.
