Angelfish have deep bodies with long, trailing edges on their fins and strong, backwards-projecting spines on the side of each gill cover. The young of large angelfish have a completely different colour pattern to the adults, and the juveniles of most large species have a contrasting pattern of alternating narrow black, blue and white stripes or circles. These are adult male scribbled angelfish.
