The Schooling Bannerfish SL43105

These beautiful fish, with their distinctive trailing dorsal fin, can be found in the Indo-Pacific region, stretching from Africa to Polynesia and Hawaii. They typically inhabit external reef slopes and channels and often gather in large groups. They primarily feed on zooplankton, and juvenile Bannerfish may act as cleaner fish, removing parasites like the cleaner wrasse. The breeding process involves forming pairs and laying eggs. I fondly remember my first visit to the Great Reef in 1974. It was quite a stark contrast to the cold, darker reefs of Jervis Bay, as a large school of these delightful fish surrounded me.
