Flocks of thousands of pelicans, magpie geese, egrets and a myriad of insects and very large saltwater crocodiles all living in a maze of channels across vast floodplains is a sight that stays with you forever. In fact, over 12,000 species of plants and animals have been recorded in the wetlands and the surrounding woodlands and escarpment regions of the World Heritage wetlands of Kakadu National Park n the Top End of the Northern Territory. This is a biological hot-spot that now has worldwide acclaim. Declared in 1978, I have visited the region since 1976 and it is a place that holds special memories.
