One of my favourite National Parks in Australia, the Yarra Ranges National Park east of Melbourne, is now being proposed by the people to be part of a major new Park, the ‘Great Forest National Park’. This sensational region supports the tallest flowering trees on Earth, the Montane ash. In their high canopies dwell owls, gliders and the tiny Leadbeater’s (or Fairy) Possum. Victoria’s precious and endangered faunal emblem lives only in these ash forests of the Central Highlands. Another stunning creature whose courting song can fill the misty forests at dawn is the Superb Lyrebird, a songster described by Sir David Attenborough as the world’s finest songster.
